if grief + quiet went on a date

A poem from Grief Circle #12 responding to the prompt, “quiet”:

If grief + quiet went on a date together,
Quiet would say, come take a candle lit bath with me,
Weep with your favorite snacks

Weep because you dropped the tacks on your mother’s birthday
Weep because it wasn’t really about the tacks

Weep because you were loved
Weep because you loved
Weep because you wish you could have known that love for longer

Come
Take a candle lit bath with me
Where your tears are the warm salt water, where you float
Amongst the stars

Come take a candle lit bath with me
In the quiet
Where your weeping has all the room to expand,
For it is snuggled in my big quiet

If grief + quiet went on a date together,
Grief would say, thank you,
Thank you for making room for me,
Thank you for listening.
