In Memory of Joan Tererro

Joan Terrero

An In-Memory-Of Portrait, Memorializing a Beloved Grandmother Who Passed from COVID-19

This portrait honors the life of Joan Tererro — May 1, 1934 - May 1, 2020.

A beloved grandmother. Born in The Bronx.

If Issa Rae’s statement, "I'm rooting for everybody Black," was a human, that was Joan Tererro.

She loved to read, especially James Patterson, and loved Western movies like Tombstone, and Shane.

She would take her grandson to explore Harlem together, educating him on anything and everything. Taking him especially to the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, making it a priority to teach him about his Black culture and taking pride in his roots.

She loved sweets, especially Butterfingers.

She was a huge fan of sales, a coupon connoisseur. If she saw a sale, she had to get it.

Her favorite colors were black and pink.

She would always sing her family goodbye as they left through the door.

Testimonial:

“This artwork Miranda created of my grandmother was so detailed and beautiful. I literally cried tears of joy when I saw it. Miranda, thank you. Thank you so much for bringing my grandmother’s life and story to life in such a beautiful and vivid way. The artwork was in the same style my grandmother loved and the colors chosen was so bright and beautiful. You even got the detail of her gold ear ring hoops. This is amazing and so are you.”
