Big Sister

40th Birthday Gift

Britt commissioned this piece for her sister’s 40th birthday: her teacher, her partner in crime, and in Britt’s own words, “the woman who tortured me as a child.” This piece turned comic illustrates a humorous memory they shared as kids:

When they were younger, her older sister invited Britt into her room for the first time ever. She had placed a chair in the middle of the room with a sheet under it and asked Britt to sit down. Taking out a pair of pinking scissors, she cut off the left side of Britt’s curls. Then she was done, and said that Britt could go.

Their mom later took them to the salon to fix Britt’s hair; looking over, Britt saw her sister getting a perm from another stylist, while she got a chili bowl cut.

I remember being younger and thinking the older kids were always so cool. I wanted to play up that idea in the piece by illustrating Britt’s older sister as a rock star.

In Her Own Words:

“So personal, so unique and so damn cool.”
