Practicing My Chinese

Illustrated Chinese character to "hang" clothes

晾衫 (long6 saam1) = to hang clothes to dry, © 2021 Breaking Egg

December got me into ordering a new planner for 2022, but instead of getting the same one I got last year, I decided to try bullet journaling. Being in the vibe of thinking about my goals and tracking things got me back into wanting to improve my Chinese.

It might have started a bit earlier actually when I was bored on the train one day, and decided to search for podcasts in Cantonese.

Two podcasts I wanted to shoutout:

  • 90後簡單生活 - A Cantonese Podcast by a girl born in the 90s — She was taking a gap year and decided to go to Japan to learn Japanese, but due to COVID, she decided to stay in Hong Kong. I really loved the transformation she talks about between ep 11 & 12.

  • Aiya Cantonese! 哎呀!廣東話打到嚟 by Yasmin Chan — The host was learning Japanese herself, and one of the things that helped her was listening to a Japanese podcast about various topics, so she decided to make one for people learning Cantonese. She talks about one technique of watching a TV show in a language you don’t know with subtitles in the language you’re trying to learn. So I started watching the K-Drama Itaewon Class with Chinese subtitles. It’s surprisingly effective so far, though I’ve only done it for two days. But it’s pretty fun! It was a drama I couldn’t get into before, but have heard it’s good, so I thought this was the perfect opportunity to watch it! (And it’s actually where I picked up the word 晾 from the illustration I created above!)

Are you learning a language? Say hi over on my Instagram @breakingegg and let me know what your favorite techniques are! ^_^
